Joseph asks…
Why was the battle of the sexes so important for tennis? Bobby Riggs vs Billie Jean King?
I don’t understand. Billie Jean King beat a 55 year old way past his peak. She herself at the time was a top player.
Then two other top players played. Martina Navratilova and Jimmy Connors. Martina was allowed to hit into the doubles court, and Connors was only allowed a serve per point (instead of two). Connors won 7-5, 6-2, even with these special rules.
So, please tell me how the King VS Riggs match was so important for women’s tennis.

admin answers:
Male and female cannot compare in any sport. On the other hand women¨s tennis was so much underrated that one 55 years old man dare to challenge one of the top female players at the time.In the case that she lost women¨s tennis would suffer even further, but she proved to male chauvinists that women¨s tennis was much better than they expected. That was the point when female tennis players earned respect they deserve.

Richard asks…
Who was the sponsor of the Billie Jean King & Bobby Riggs Tennis Match?
Just wondering who/what sponsored the Billie Jean King & Bobby Riggs Tennis Match in 1973.

admin answers:
My understanding of the series of matches played by Riggs against Margaret Court and B-J King was that Riggs challenged Court initially, and that he had a large wager with an acquaintance that he would win. I assume that Riggs and his acquaintance financed the tennis matches by selling the TV rights to them.
